すわる・すわらせる【座る・座らせる】

①［着席する］

〔腰を下ろす， 腰掛ける， 正座する〕

**sit

|自|〖D〗 〖S〗［SVM］(人が)〔…に/…のそばに〕座る， 座っている， 着席する〔at， in， on/by〕(⇔stand)《◆通例「座る」動作は sit down で， この場合座る場所は特にいわなくてよい》; ［SVC/doing］ …の状態で［…しながら］座っている

He sat by mistake on his hat. 彼はうっかり帽子の上に座ってしまった

sit on the floor 床に座る

Mary will sit still and look at the sea for hours. メリーは何時間もじっと座って海を眺めていることがある

sit with one's legs crossed 脚を組んで座る.

This room sits 50 people. ＝We can sit 50 people in this room. この部屋には50人座れる.

**seat

seat oneself on ［in］ a chair ［at a table， on a bench， in an armchair］ いす［テーブル， ベンチ， ひじ掛けいす］に座る

Please be seated. 《正式》お座りになってください《◆ be seated は通例「座っている」状態を表すが， この場合は sit down の丁寧表現》 This room can seat ［has a seating capacity for］ 50 people. この部屋には50人座れる.

*settle

settle oneself in a chair いすに座ってくつろぐ.

**rest

|自|(休息・安楽のために)横になる， もたれる， 座る

squat

すわる【座る】

〔腰かける〕 sit (down); 〔正座する〕 kneel on the floor; 〔座･地位を占める〕 be seated; take a seat.

●机に向かってすわる sit at a desk

・ピアノの前にすわる sit in front of a piano

・くつろいですわる sit comfortably [in a relaxed posture]

・いすにどっかとすわる sink [drop] into a chair

・どしんとすわる plump [plunk] oneself down; plop down on 《a sofa》

・大臣のいすにすわる 〔着任する〕 take up [occupy] a ministerial post

・始発駅からすわって通勤する get a seat [be able to sit down] on the train to work from the starting station
